On Demand: Teaching Mindfulness with Trauma Sensitivity
with Tracy Ochester, CMT-200

January 1 (Wednesday)
at 12:00 am

Class length
60 minutes

Recently there has been more focus on the critical need for service providers, the general public and organizations to become trauma-informed. As a result, more people and systems have increased their sensitivity and understanding of the severe impact of traumatic experiences. When offered sensitively and in an informed way, mindfulness can help in reducing the suffering of unresolved or undischarged trauma. Offering mindfulness without this sensitivity can actually contribute to harm.

This 90-minute training is excerpted from a live 6-hour workshop style class for people who share the practices and attitudes of mindfulness with others. The workshop, led by Angela Caruso-Yahne, CMT-200, certified mindfulness teacher, first responder, and Buddhist Chaplain with years of training and experience in trauma informed teaching and Tracy Ochester, PsyD, a certified mindfulness teacher and a licensed psychologist, guided participants in an experiential journey toward greater sensitivity and awareness in implementing mindfulness practices from a trauma-aware perspective.

Learning Objectives:
  • Review the prevalence, types and layers of trauma
  • Understand the stress response, the role of the autonomic nervous system in trauma, and the human capacity for expanding the window of presence
  • Develop a clear understanding of why it’s important for mindfulness informed professionals to know about trauma, how mindfulness-based practices may be useful, and the potential problems trauma survivors may experience with mindfulness based practices
  • Explore post-traumatic growth and how mindfulness can contribute to this possibility
  • Practice strategies for becoming more trauma-focused and aware when leading mindfulness classes and trainings
