About the artist:
Jason Wang is a ceramic artist who is currently a resident artist at the Northern Clay Center in Minneapolis, MN. He intends his vessels and sculptures to invoke a strong emotional response in order to further the dialogue about identity, mental health, and mindfulness in contemporary America. Jason earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Kansas City Art Institute in Kansas City, MO. He was awarded a scholarship to partake in a workshop at Anderson Ranch Art Center in Snowmass Village, CO and has exhibited in group exhibitions at Leedy-Voulkos Art Center in Kansas City, MO.

Materials and Technique: Clay

Terracotta  Texture: The texture on the bowls was created by applying liquid clay called slip. I first place the bowl on a banding wheel then start to spin it and with my hands, I finger paint on the slip. With each rotation of the wheel, I move my hand up and down creating the fluid texture you see. Some of the textures are created with my hands and others with a brush.

Surface:
Terra Sigillata is a fine particle slip that is historically used to seal ceramic surfaces when polished and resulting in a velvety surface. However, aside from its practical use, terra sigillata is great for applying over textures without obscuring details. The colors come from adding various stains and oxides to a white base terra sig. Then brushing onto the tea bowl at the bone dry state. At this state most of the water has evaporated from the clay. This allows the terra sig to properly adhere to the clay surface; however, this state is also when the clay is the most fragile. Afterwards, the bowl is polished and fired. Then the interior glaze is applied and a black copper oxide patina is sponge on then sponge off the exterior- leaving the patina in the recesses of the surface.  The purpose of the patina is to make the textures stand out and give the piece an aged appearance. Finally the bowl is fired one last time.
